About the Artist
Maeve Coulter is a visual artist based in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, her practice encompasses printmaking and textiles. She is the print tutor at Grennan Mill Craft School in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny and the director and founder of Blackstack Studio, a fine art print studio in Kilkenny city.
“The ideas I explore are reflected in the physical, making processes that I choose. I transform paper and cloth by printing, dyeing, rusting, layering, pleating and stitching. I am interested in the notion of making, un-making and re-making. I allude to themes of perception and distortion, ritual and repetition.
Recent works are a return to traditional etching on paper. The black and white pared back imagery represents a moment of reflection on vulnerability and loss. The etching process particularly appeals to me, the controlled erosion of a metal plate, finding the various depths and layers that will yield the level of darkness or light I require to express form and feeling.”
