About the Artist
I am a printmaker and painter who graduated from the painting school of the Royal College of Art in 1989. My work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions and is included in private collections in Britain, Europe, the USA and Australia. I have been the recipient of several awards including the TSB Bank Travel Award, the Oppenheim John Downes Memorial Award, the East London Printmakers Prize and the Eames Fine Art Prize.
As a printmaker I produce mostly linocuts and screen prints, in editions. I am interested in developing strong compositional images with motifs based on remembered landscapes and figurative elements from my childhood and from things I notice in the city and the countryside: birds, a line of trees, a cloud on the horizon, abandoned buildings.
With linocuts I work from an initial black background printed on a press, to the addition of lighter colours that I print by hand, varying the pressure to allow areas of black and other colours to show through. In developing this technique I am seeking to achieve a rich surface appearance which, in and around the image, is more reliant on accident than on a predetermined, proscribed mark.
