Zuleika Gallery is delighted to announce the exhibition Impressions in Colour which will be open from 9 March to 25 April 2022. The exhibition will focus on printmaking by four leading British Artists – Ian Davenport, Howard Hodgkin, Michael Craig-Martin and Gillian Ayres.

These artists are all connected through the medium of print, and by their use of bright and bold colour in their work. This exhibition will be a celebration of colour and printmaking. This group of artists are highly decorated; Ayres and Davenport were both nominated for the Turner Prize and Hodgkin won the prestigious award in in 1985. Davenport and Hodgkin represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, Ayres and Craig-Martin were elected to the Royal Academy whilst Hodgkin was a trustee of the Tate and National Gallery. The brilliant works are enough evidence on their own of the artists’ worth, however the extensive list of the artists’ achievements and accolades provides further evidence of their significance in British culture.

You are invited to submit work for donation to the Printmakers Council Archive located at Scarborough Museums Trust.

The collection was originally set up in 1992 but an archive had long been an objective for PmC. The original request to members in February 1992 noted that the gallery’s permanent collection contained ‘works by Ivon Hitchens, Matthew Smith, Gaudier Brzeska, and prints by Michael Rothenstein, Anthony Gross, John Piper and Ceri Richards’. The send-out suggested that the archive would be made available for study access, reference and exhibitions, and encouraged members to donate ‘the very best (works) from your oeuvre’.

The donation in 1992 had been the only one until 2016 when PmC in collaboration with Scarborough Art Gallery revived the archive, and this led to a very successful exhibition of all the donated prints together with selections from the collection in the spring of 2017. Since then, the museum has hosted exhibitions of members’ work on several occasions.

Our intention is to select one work from each member in order to provide as comprehensive a representation of the current membership as is possible. Prints for this donation can be from any date, provided you were a member of Printmakers Council in the year the print was made. This will help to enlarge the date range of the prints held in the archive.

Size: Flat prints can be up to a maximum size of A1. 3 dimensional works are also acceptable but only if possible to store flat, and under A1 in size when flat.

Selected prints must be submitted flat, unframed, and in good condition with clean borders, wrapped in cellophane with a card backing as if for display in a print browser. Prints that are considered to fall short of the required standard at any stage will be rejected.

All prints will be photographed professionally before sending to the archive, so please ensure your print is easily removable from the acetate. Resealable cellophane envelopes are preferred.

Project overview.

Ecologies of change is a collaboration between artists from Australia and the Printmakers Council UK. Supported by the PMC and the Royal Overseas League, the exhibition will be shown at ROSL. The project is curated by Clare Humphries (Australia) and Jacki Baxter and Venessa Pugh (UK).

Project Introduction.

Ecologies of change invites artists to visualise their response to a shift in consciousness as we recognise the impact and consequences of human activity on Earth’s ecosystems. We ask artists to consider the consequences of human-led ecological change and imagine other ways we might live in the aftermath of climate change.

By 2021 when this exhibition will be held, the International Commission on Stratigraphy is set to formally define a new slice of geologic record, the Anthropocene, to mark the profound ways in which humans have altered the planet. The Anthropocene identifies a new period in which humans have become the dominant bio-geo-physical force shaping the world.

At a time of profound change, Ecologies of Change forms a conversation across the hemispheres. The project brings together artists who share an ethics of care for Earth’s ecosystems. It invites them to take stock of the Anthropocene and to share visions of both loss and hope for change.

Members will be invited to submit up to 3 works via the PMC website as usual and all artists will pay a £15.00 flat fee. The works may be of any size and chosen prints should then be framed in a plain frame by the artist. It is hoped that all printmaking mediums will be represented in the final show including original digital prints.

Submit here

UK selection will be undertaken by members of the committee.

Insurance and Sales.

All artists from both countries will be responsible for their own insurance and sales money will go to the artist. ROSL will take 30% commission. In the event of any lockdown, the exhibition will be held on line.

Deadlines.

The exhibition will be held at ROSL between 30th June and 15th September 2021.

The last date for UK submissions is May 15th 2021.

Successful artists will be informed by May 31st.

Prints must be delivered to the PMC office on June 9th or 16th.

On Thursday, 17th September 2020 The Printmakers Council will hold its first ever one-day Print Symposium, from 10am to 4pm at The Royal Over-Seas League, Piccadilly, London SW1A 1LR on the following theme:

Relaxing the Line: the Unconventional in Printmaking.

Later, in the evening on the same day, there will be a Private View to celebrate the opening of the related PMC Members’ Exhibition, which will run from 17th September until 6th December, and will comprise members’ work to be selected from submissions.

We will be inviting artists to submit work that is sympathetic to the theme of unconventional printmaking. We wish to avoid a prescriptive focus and the selection committee will simply be looking for work with content and technique that will reflect our dynamic and diverse membership.

Generally, the work should be suitable for wall hanging, and whilst all sizes of work will be welcomed, this exhibition can support some larger works. There is a medium-sized glass display cabinet with three shelves that can be used for 3D work, books, ceramics and sculptures.

Further details about both the Symposium and the Exhibition submissions will follow shortly.
