7.00pm Carcanet Classics Book Launch Jenny Lewis’ Gilgamesh Retold and Philip Terry’s Dictator. With readings by the poets and by Iraqi poet Adnan al-Sayegh. Introduced by Michael Schmidt

A major exhibition of texts, prints, films and photographs centred around UK poet Jenny Lewis’ MPhil/ PhD work at Goldsmiths – Gilgamesh Retold – a re-imagining of the first piece of written literature in the world, the 2,500 BC Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh. The exhibition also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War Mesopotamian Campaign.

Frances Kiernan explores the exhibition’s themes in abstract form to suggest ideas around the code breaking of writing systems such as cuneiform. In her series of prints she uses layers of a placeholder Latin text to produce a language of textured surfaces that conceal and reveal fragments from Gilgamesh Retold.
