Diane McLellan’s work reflects her interest in places where people are travelling through, and the traces they leave behind. Whether in a city or the countryside, the ephemeral nature of time and the changing of light provides a constant source of fascination to her. A sense of time, whether passing, frozen or snatched in a photograph, lies underneath the imagery chosen. People rarely take centre stage, though they can sometimes be seen as fleeting figures passing by. This is also reflected in her interest in how time and distance can imbue everyday objects with emotional connections.
Diane studied Visual Art at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, focusing mainly on printmaking. This was followed by a career as a television graphic designer producing title sequences and promos for dramas. This influenced her work on her return to printmaking, both visually and technically.

Favourite printmaking processes include lithography, monotypes, image transfer and photopolymer etchings. A print always starts with a photograph, a snapshot of time. This image becomes the source of a print through various layers of mark-making processes, resulting in small, variable editions.

‘I am inspired by the fleeting instances in time, those half-seen possibilities caught through images, be it scenery or a beloved object. I catch these chance moments which seem to tell a story in a photograph and translate them into prints.’
Diane’s most recent exhibitions include the following:
‘From Whernside’ as part of the PMC’s 60th celebrations at Footprint Gallery at Fusion
‘Over The Bridge to Waterloo’ Southbank Printmakers ’Tides and Tales’ at Morley Gallery
‘Weather Coming In’ at Oxmarket Contemporary Gallery
‘London Skies – From Upper Ground’ at RHACC with Wednesday Printmakers
