We are delighted to share the press release from Scarborough Art Gallery regarding the Printmakers Council Print Archive and the upcoming exhibition.
Lasting Impressions – a selection of works from the Printmakers Council archive
25 March to 18 June 2017
An exhibition celebrating printmakers and their work, and featuring many prints which have never been on public display before, can be seen at Scarborough Art Gallery in the spring of 2017.
Lasting Impressions comprises work from the archive of the Printmakers Council, for which Scarborough Art Gallery is the repository.
Formed in London in 1965, the Printmakers Council is run by artists to promote and develop printmaking in the UK. A non-profit-making organisation, it supports traditional and innovative printmaking, encourages co-operative working and holds exhibitions.
Scarborough Museums Trust Collections Manager Jennifer Dunne explains: “In 1992, the Printmakers Council made a donation to us of around 100 works which was intended to be the beginning of a relationship between the two organisations.
“In 2015, they contacted us again with a view to reigniting the relationship and officially confirming the Scarborough Collections as a repository for PmC members’ work. The new exhibition is a celebration of the renewed relationship and acquisition of this important collection of contemporary art. It will feature many of the works in the 2016 deposition, with a selection of works from the 1992 deposition.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Scarborough Collections to become the repository for a wealth of contemporary art from a wide range of artists employing different printing techniques. This is particularly fitting for the Scarborough Borough area, which has such a rich artistic history; a strong connection to art and artists, which still continues today.”
Margaret Ashman, chair of the Printmakers Council, says: “We were delighted to re-establish our link with Scarborough Museums Trust by sending a new deposition of prints for their permanent collection at the end of 2016. The creation of an archive was a founding objective for the Printmakers Council, which was realised in 1992 when the first deposition of prints was made to Scarborough. We seem to have forgotten about it, until the examination of our document archives last year during our 50th anniversary celebrations brought it to light.”
Scarborough Art Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday, plus Bank Holidays. A £3 annual pass gains entry to both the Gallery and the Rotunda Museum for a year.
